Rejected warder Omedi back with Prison break attempt

Denis Omedi, the 10-goal hero for Kitara, is set to return to Luzira Prison Grounds on Friday, aiming to settle scores with Maroons, the team that rejected him in the early stages of his career.

As the StarTimes Uganda Premier League leaders seek to maintain their lead over immediate challengers Bul, Omedi will be on a mission to increase his goal tally and compete in the tight golden boot race, while also seeking redemption against the Prison Warders, who are currently sixth in the league with 30 points from 19 matches.

Omedi, a nursing graduate of Lira School of Comprehensive Nursing and a trained prison warder, was sidelined by Maroons in 2019 without making a debut. However, a work transfer to Masindi Prisons opened up opportunities for him with betPawa Fufa Big League side Booma, where he quickly became a standout player.

Despite Maroons expressing interest in re-signing Omedi at the start of the season after his impressive performance with Booma, the 27-year-old forward declined, feeling the wounds of betrayal were still fresh.

With 39 points from 19 matches, Kitara, led by coach Brian Ssenyondo, remains focused on maintaining their lead, with the goal of securing maximum points against Maroons, the only team to have defeated them at home earlier in the season.

Meanwhile, Bul, under Abbey Kikomeko, faces URA at the Mehta Lugazi Stadium, aiming to bounce back and keep the pressure on Kitara. Currently second in the table with 38 points from 18 matches, Bul needs to rediscover their winning form to stay in contention for the title.

Other key matches in the league include Vipers facing off against Wakiso giants at St. Mary’s Stadium-Kitende on Sunday, and Mbarara City taking on Soltilo Bright Stars at Kavumba Grounds.

With both Mbarara City and Soltilo Bright Stars tied on 23 points, but with Mbarara City having played one game less, the match promises to be closely contested, with neither team currently involved in the relegation battle.

The StarTimes Uganda Premier League fixtures for Friday include Maroons vs Kitara at Prisons Ground-Luzira, URA vs. Bul at Mehta Sports Stadium-Lugazi, and Soltilo Bright Stars vs. Mbarara City at Kavumba.
