Three dead in Koboko road crash

Three individuals lost their lives in a traffic accident that also left four others severely injured on the Koboko-Oraba Highway in Koboko District. An eyewitness reported that the driver was traveling at a high speed when he lost control and collided with a pavement.

“The vehicle overtook me at a high speed, and shortly afterward, I witnessed the driver losing control and hitting the pavement before the car overturned. It rolled several times down the valley. Despite our efforts to rescue the occupants, three of them tragically lost their lives,” the eyewitness recounted.

According to Koboko District Traffic Officer Edwin Kushaba, the accident occurred at Pakayo Village, Midia Parish, Midia Sub-county, and was caused by mechanics conducting road tests. The vehicle involved, a black Toyota Wish carrying seven occupants and driven by Bernard Akuma, resulted in fatalities, including Eyoti Caesar, 27, who passed away at Koboko Hospital. The survivors are currently receiving treatment at Koboko Hospital and Mungufeni Medical Center.

During a media briefing in Kampala earlier this week, the police disclosed that 77 individuals died, and 399 sustained injuries in separate road accidents across the country last week. Among the deceased, 34% were motorcyclists, 30% were pedestrians, and 9% were passengers on motorcycles.

A police report released last month indicated an increase in road traffic crashes in 2023 compared to 2022, with 23,608 crashes reported to the police. Out of these, 4,179 were fatal, 12,487 were serious, and 6,942 were minor.
